First Steps With Linux — Now in Paperback

It took longer than I expected, but the paperback is finally here.

It’s been a while.

The last time I wrote here, I was announcing the release of First Steps With Linux after nearly two years of writing.

Since then, things haven’t exactly slowed down.

I’ve continued improving the book, updating chapters, redesigning diagrams, releasing a Dark Edition, and working on something many readers had been asking for from the very beginning.

A paperback.

Today I’m happy to finally say:

First Steps With Linux is now available in paperback.

Holding the finished copy in my hands for the first time was surreal.

After spending thousands of hours writing, editing, redesigning diagrams, and refining explanations, seeing it as a real book made all those late nights worth it.

I’m incredibly proud of how it turned out.

It wasn’t as simple as pressing “Print”

I assumed turning the manuscript into a paperback would be the easy part.

I was wrong.

Finding a publisher that could actually print a technical book of this size took far longer than I expected. After trying several options, I eventually settled on Amazon KDP.

Then another challenge appeared.

The manuscript exceeded KDP’s page limit for the trim size I originally wanted.

The obvious solution was to split the book into two separate volumes.

I didn’t want to do that.

From day one, the vision was simple.

Everything in one book.

One book you can keep on your desk.

One place to learn Linux from the ground up and keep coming back to as your skills grow.

So instead of splitting it, I went back and reworked the layout page by page. I adjusted spacing, optimized the formatting, and removed every bit of unnecessary whitespace until the manuscript finally fit within the printing limits.

I also chose a larger 8.5 × 11-inch format. It meant giving up some of Amazon’s distribution options, but I was happy to make that trade.

Having the complete book in a single volume mattered more to me than wider distribution.

It took far longer than I expected.

But it was worth every minute.

More than just another Linux book

When I started writing First Steps With Linux, my goal wasn’t simply to write another Linux guide.

I wanted to create a resource that teaches Linux as a system—not just as a collection of commands.

Something that helps readers connect the dots, build confidence, and understand why things work the way they do.

Seeing that idea become a physical book has been one of the most rewarding moments of my career.

This newsletter has played a much bigger role in this project than you might realize.

Many of the explanations in the book were inspired by questions from readers.

Many of the diagrams started as ideas for articles published here.

And many improvements came directly from the feedback you shared over the years.

What’s next?

Now that the paperback is finally out, I can get back to doing what started all of this.

Writing.

It’s been a little quiet around here, and I appreciate everyone who stuck around while I was focused on the book.

I’ve got a long list of Linux deep dives, tutorials, and behind-the-scenes articles I’ve been wanting to write, and I’m looking forward to publishing regularly again.

I’ve also been thinking about expanding the newsletter a little. Alongside Linux articles, I’d like to start sharing certification preparation material for readers working towards RHCSA, CompTIA Linux+, and LFCS. I also plan to occasionally branch into networking, firewalls, and other infrastructure topics that naturally complement Linux.

The goal hasn’t changed.

To create practical, beginner-friendly content that helps you build real-world skills and become a more confident Linux and systems professional.
